Lee was the lead singer of the band Os Mutantes, that was formed in São Paulo in 1966 by Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias. They are recognised as one of the most influential band in the brazilian Rock.
As a member of Os Mutantes, Rita Lee gained recognition for her unique voice, songwriting, and stage presence. The band's psychedelic rock sound and innovative approach to music made them a hit with audiences and critics alike. Rita Lee wrote and performed some of the band's most popular songs, including "Panis Et Circenses" and "A Minha Menina."
After leaving Os Mutantes in 1972, Rita Lee embarked on a successful solo career, releasing over 30 albums throughout her career.
Lee died at her home in São Paulo, "surrounded by the love of her entire family". She had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021.
Latin Academy reacts with a statement:
"Rita Lee was a visionary artist and one of the best-selling singer/songwriters in the history of Brazil. Winner of a Latin GRAMMY® and nominated on multiple occasions, “the Queen of Brazilian Rock” spearheaded the tropicália movement with the bands Os Mutantes and Tutti Frutti. After embarking on a solo career, she recorded several albums—amongst them her legendary 1979 LP Rita Lee— which catapulted her to massive success and gave us classics like “Mania De Você,” “Lança Perfume” y “Caso Sério.” In addition to a string of sold-out concerts and acoustic and live recordings, in 2015 she celebrated her monumental career with a CD box set and an autobiography. More recently, she was honored with The Latin Recording Academy®’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. Our most sincere condolences to her family, friends and all lovers of her music. Rest in peace, Rita Lee!"
